Signatures by Lucas Alves follows the story of a young writer and his quest for self-discovery. After an underwhelming response from his publisher for his latest novel, Landon Cassidy packs up his stuff and loyal dog, Maple, into his 1965 Chevrolet and wanders across the country until his truck breaks down in the middle of nowhere in West Virginia. He inadvertently comes across Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harrison Granger, who invites Landon and Maple into his sprawling ranch. Soon, Landon becomes a key member of Granger's ranch, beginning a burgeoning romantic relationship with the horse trainer, Evelyn Chambers. After writing a foreword for Granger's latest novel, Landon starts working on his manuscript. However, when Granger's estranged wife returns from Florida, it culminates in a return of Granger's old self. Additionally, an unexpected tragedy changes Landon's life forever.
Lucas Alves' character-driven drama novel is full of heart and intrigue, perfectly showcasing how purpose brings meaning to a person's life. Signatures is bittersweet, at times heartbreaking, but above all, thoroughly absorbing to read. Alves paces the plot well, and the narrative immerses you from the first page to the last. Landon is a complex individual bogged down by his insecurities. His mentor-protégé dynamic with Granger is all the more fascinating because as much as Granger renews Landon's passion for writing, Landon's appearance also brings out Granger's lust for life. I also enjoyed the scenes featuring Landon and Evelyn together. All in all, this is a brilliant book for anyone who loves to read slice-of-life stories. I will recommend this book to literary fiction aficionados.
