In Shot, Kristin Durfee spins a riveting, intricate crime tale involving love, deceit, and greed. Thirty and unmarried, Ruth finds herself on the receiving end of Lawrence's advances, whose family is known for being wealthy and well above her class. Lawrence hates to be the loser and underachiever in the family. Consumed by pride and bitterness, he is determined to do all it takes to gain the respect he deserves. Though Kelly is good at her job as an NYPD detective, she constantly has to deal with the derogatory attitude toward women in her shoes in the early 1900s. Despite being pregnant, Kelly hopes to prove a point as she looks into a series of murders and searches for the missing links. Shot captivates readers with a group of intriguing characters, including a desperate female detective and a narcissistic murderer hiding in plain sight.
Fans of crime novels will love Shot by Kristin Durfee! Its smart multiple perspectives offer readers the perfect opportunity to see both the detective and murderer in action. Kelly's thorough investigation is a joy to follow. Her keen observations from studying the wounds and positions of the bodies in murder scenes are described in detail and often lead to brilliant deductions. The book is also a great reflection of historical and societal issues, including sexism, income disparity, and marriage pressure. It's interesting to see that despite being from a wealthy home, Lawrence seeks the attention of someone from a lower class to prove his worth. Shot is a must-read for fans of brilliant detective stories with strong historical themes like Sherlock Holmes. It's addictive enough to keep you reading past your bedtime and profound enough to have you lost in thought. I loved it!
