Join an exciting time-traveling martial arts adventure with Phoebe An Lee's Shaman Punk Princess. Born into a noble warrior family of shamans, Ling Jinlei is a young martial artist known for her Flying Crane fighting style. However, after a shocking betrayal, Jinlei's village is attacked by the demon of greed and his army, leading her mother to send her thirteen hundred years into the future. Jinlei suddenly finds herself in the company of a couple of rebels named Chains and Gidget in the year 2050 in a futuristic China. She discovers that the all-powerful Corp. X, led by the treacherous Dao Fei and his allies, has subjugated the entire populace. After finding one of her distant relatives, Jinlei and her friends work toward bringing down the corporation. But first, she must save an old friend from becoming a demon.
Drawing inspiration from Eastern mythology and wuxia, Phoebe An Lee presents a time-travel adventure story that is bound to entrance fans of fantasy and Chinese martial arts. Part martial arts fantasy adventure and part cyberpunk thriller, Shaman Punk Princess draws from multiple genres and has a bit of everything. The plot moves at a brisk pace, featuring mesmerizing action sequences that are described in vivid detail. The main characters are very likable. You'll find yourself rooting for Jinlei and her friends in their attempts to take down an evil organization led by a malevolent entity that seeks absolute power. Jinlei, Kai, and Jun are my three favorite characters from the book. The ending hints at upcoming books in this saga, and I'm very much looking forward to reading them. Readers who enjoy Chinese martial arts are in for a treat!
