In the stream of consciouness style of writing that James Joyce made famous in "Ulysses", Joseph Lucilla has written "Shadows and Dreams". Main character John J. Rosko is the grandson of a hardworking Sicilian immigrant. Throughout this well-written book John enters into dialogues with friends Rudy and Lester, bunkmates Cookie and and Rick, prostitute Rita and eventually his true love, Bobi Higgins, promotes his viewpoint on how the United States has gone in a bad direction, fighting in Vietnam, electing terrible men as President, supporting the rich and not the working class man. On page 97, John states "Yeah, that's what traps them, all that crap about God,country, duty, freedom." Sober, drunk, John tells his point of view and debates with friends and foe alike. For a man who doesn't hold a steady job, who dropped out of college, and lives in a San Francisco basement, John Rosko is intelligent and verbal. Killed by a laundry truck as he steps off a curb, will John make it in heaven or just argue with everyone there?
"Shadows and Dreams, Night & Fog, Sandcrabs & Sun" is one man's viewpoint of the history of the world and every event that's taken place since time began. It is well-written with an often biting humor. In the plot, Rosko's life is laid out well from his days in parochial school to his time in Heaven. His characters are three-dimensional and delightful, especially the nuns who attempted to teach him in his school days. Not all readers will be drawn into reading this remarkable book, but those that do will laugh, agree, disagree and not be able to put it down until the very last word is read.
