Set in Stone (The Petralist Book 1) by Frank Morin is a young adult fantasy. When armies attack Connor's sleepy little village, he gets caught in the rising conflict. He has a power so strong that both sides want to control it for themselves. They try to win over Connor's loyalties with lies, trickery, bribery and flattery. Connor's friends work to free the village from its current siege. Connor is more interested in trying to discover the truth about both sides so he knows which side to align with. Both sides are claiming to be his ally, but how does he know who to trust? What if he makes the wrong choice and helps the bad guys win? His only hope might come in the form of a giant gamble, to listen and trust in a curse that could destroy them all. But really, what other choice does he have?
This is an enjoyable read full of magic and fighting, nobility and honor. It is about using power for good and knowing who you are fighting for before joining a fight, even if that fight is forced upon you. The world building was done nicely and I enjoyed journeying through this landscape with these characters. I think readers who enjoy fantasy will find this a very interesting and entertaining read and will come away from this story thoroughly happy with the great epic battles, magic, and curses that they endured!
