Seeds of the Bitter Harvest, a new book by John Sheppard, is a foray into a post-occupation Capitol City, after it has fallen to the Enemy. Protagonist Andy Whitman, newly orphaned and alone, clings to the last note his mother gave him before sending him and two of his friends to the safety of a refugee camp. The note gives him the name of a man his mother promises will help him, Chadwick Lange, and the company Mr. Lange works for, KML International Holdings Group. Andy, who fears he has lost everything in the war, learns from Chadwick that he stands to inherit his family’s large fortune. What he doesn’t know is that Edward Rant, the president of KML, hopes to manipulate Andy’s wealth for his own benefit, and Chadwick fears this will put Andy at great risk. And for Andy, even finding that he might be financially secure does little to provide solace to him. Missing his family and the happiness of his life before the country was occupied, he turns to a young Chinese prostitute, Daiyu, for comfort. Their relationship develops into much more than he originally intended, but soon it appears likely that she will be taken from him as well.
Seeds of the Bitter Harvest takes us from the depths of despair of one young man’s heart to healing and hope through the intervention of God via an angel named Obadiah. This book is an easy read, one that can be finished in an evening. The Christian message is not overpowering, but is there and real in this novel. The overwhelming message is one of hope and redemption, and author John Sheppard leaves us with a feeling of optimism and anticipation. I hope Mr. Sheppard continues to write in this vein, and that the hopefulness of his work carries through to his next book.
