Searching for the Eminent: March of the Meek is the first book in The Fleeting Requiem fantasy series by Marvin North, a tale that is filled with adventure. While the last inhabited city prepares for the apocalypse, a motley group of characters living at the fringes of society must determine their fate in a world unraveling fast and heading toward doom. While he lives away from the troubles of Last Thesi and under the care of a mercenary called Maven, Rekco Curse still wants to know the whereabouts of his brave father. A cabin and two strangers — a magical mentor, Gofun, and his twelve-year-old mentee, Kyoku — come into his life in an unexpected manner. Can they stop the apocalypse or will they perish together with the town of Last Thesi?
This is a tale that melds coming-of-age themes with adventure, magic, and the power of friendship. The characters are people living on the edge of society and the dichotomy between their lives and the lives of those who oppress them is unmistakably clear. Rekco Curse needs answers about the disappearance of his father and he still suffers from the loss of his courageous mother. Marvin North’s characters are the meek, and as readers follow these characters, they wonder if they shall, indeed, be like the Meek of the Beatitudes. There is so much to love in this book, starting with the deft storytelling, allowing both the inner and physical worlds of the characters to come out clearly in the story.
I loved the characters the moment I met them, especially Cathy and Rekco and the way they are written — the reader immediately knows that they are outcasts from the way they are described. The story has strong plot points and while it is character-driven, the author weaves elements into the story that make it suspenseful and utterly gripping. The reader wants to know more about the apocalypse, the unraveling of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the protagonist’s father, and many similar details. Searching for the Eminent: March of the Meek is a skillfully told story with sophisticated characters, a well-imagined setting, and a plot that makes it a page-turner.
