Ellis and his dreamer friend Charlie were spending a day at the beach, with Ellis relaxing on the sand, and Charlie collecting seashells. If he had a choice, Charlie declared he would like to be a dolphin, playful and carefree. They began walking home when Ellis suddenly decided to remain on the beach. As he walked on the hard sand, he came across an unusual shell, a perfect present for Charlie. The snail inside the shell stung him. Writhing with pain, he fell and the surf washed him into the sea. In the water, he began to change into … you will have to read the story to find out. Let’s just say the experience transformed his life.
I found Sea Treatment diverting and it kept me amused. David Serra has an easy writing style. There is nothing complicated about this story, reminding me of the many fairytales I read as a kid. And kids should like Sea Treatment. I liked the imaginative descriptive flashes, picturing myself on that beach. It was amusing to find Ellis the victim of a strange transformation, rather than his dreamer friend Charlie. It is regrettable that David Serra had not expanded it more fully, leaving me wondering more about Charlie and Ellis as characters. Nevertheless, if someone wants to lose himself in a wild fantasy, this story will get him there. Something to read in bed … then broadly grin afterward.
