Looking for a chilling account that is steeped in suspense and mystery? Sarah’s Diary by Tshombe Amen will fit the bill. After moving from Phoenix to southern California with her family, Sarah goes through some difficult transitions, just as every fourteen-year-old would. When she made friends with Ericka, she began to feel like she was fitting in and could finally put Arizona and her old friends behind her. When Ericka mysteriously disappeared and the truth about Ericka’s family began to be brought to light, Sarah became paranoid. When her own parents ended up going missing and were assumed dead, she knew that whoever had killed Ericka and her parents had killed hers too. As she and her brother, Jason, are taken in by her aunt and uncle, things begin to seem normal and she starts to make new friends, but even Jason is acting weird and she’s afraid of him. With Jason away at a drug rehab facility, Sarah is finally beginning to have a normal life. She meets some new friends, is discovered by a wealthy teen named Owen, and begins to settle into a wonderful life. Will it all last? Is it all real?
The reader is drawn along in Sarah’s Diary in such a natural way that it seems as if every word written has to be true, but was it? Tshombe does an excellent job of bringing out the perception of events from the perspective of only one person and has the reader believing it all the way through. After being emotionally tied to the author of the diary, the mystery and suspense deepen with each event that takes place. The author alternates between stirring up suspense and dropping the reader back into a more relaxed and realistic state, making each twist and turn seem normal. Top notch work! You’ll love it from beginning to end and will come away wondering if it was really true.
