Rye Nova: Between Flight and Fight by K.M. Greffe is a short, taut and suspenseful thriller about Rye Nova, a man with the “gift” of foresight, who wishes more than anything in the world that he wasn’t cursed with the horror of foreseeing future events. His night visions have long plagued him and what he sees is invariably bad but worst of all there is usually not enough information in the vision to do anything about them in real life and change the horrible event that he foretells. The visions have led him down the path of alcoholism in the past and self-isolation today, to the point where he desperately does not want to even touch another human being as the mere touch of someone’s hand can lead to a vision of the future. He trusts only one person completely and that is the woman who saved his life years earlier, when he planned to commit suicide; that woman he calls Mama. Beyond her, he has no close contacts and lives alone on a houseboat he is working to renovate for himself. When he visits the local hardware store for a paint-scraper, he inadvertently walks into a domestic murder dispute between a man and his wife’s lover that threatens to end in total disaster for all the innocent people trapped in the shop by mere happenstance. Can Rye negotiate or fight himself and his fellow hostages out of this perilous situation or should he take flight as his natural instinct dictates?
Rye Nova: Between Flight and Fight is a truly suspenseful and gripping story with an unlikely hero and an equally disparate and unusual cast of character. Author K.M. Greffe has created in Rye a lead character that is many things to many readers. His obvious flaws and difficulties with life will be easy for many to understand and empathize with, and yet his burning desire to ultimately do good and make a difference to events he sees through his visions marks him as a man of character and honor. I particularly enjoyed the internal dialogue Rye has as he tries to balance his desire to help his fellow hostages with his overwhelming need to be apart from other human beings. The relationship between the woman Rye calls Mama and himself is definitely one of the most interesting of the story. It is clear that she is the only person in the world he truly trusts and similarly she would never do anything to cause harm to come to him. As a reader, the emotional rollercoaster the author takes us on is intense, powerful, and gripping. I certainly became enthralled in this drama and found myself talking to the characters at times, advising them on courses of action, which is a sure sign the author has got it right. The author clearly has a wonderful grasp of the character’s motivations and needs. I can highly recommend this book for all lovers of suspense – it’s a ripper!
