Rupture State by Matthew B. Bartkowski chronicles the life and struggles of Otto Bonder. Otto was crushed by guilt and dread after a restaurant he designed collapsed and killed hundreds in the rubble. Devastated with grief, Otto was now a pariah in his town called Browntown. A floating city was built when global warming got the better of humanity, and it was one of many made. Sent to the mainland until the dust and chaos settled after the incident, Otto had no idea he would meet the very people who would become his salvation. Samantha Justus and her brothers saved him and opened his eyes to what truly was happening in Browntown. With them by his side, Otto knew he had to do something to protect the people of Browntown before another tragedy happened, and more people paid the price for the mistakes of someone else.

Otto was a hard protagonist to like, and I loved that. Author Matthew B. Bartkowski did a great job of adding depth to Otto’s character, and gave him opportunities to grow and become a well-rounded and likable character as the story progressed. The action and the chase were incredible. I felt the adrenaline when Otto and the others were running for their lives from the unknown enemy. I also loved how the author revealed what was truly happening in the floating city and what was at stake if Otto and his companions failed. The world-building was fantastic and handled beautifully. Browntown was fascinating, to say the least, but it was the situation on the mainland that intrigued me the most. While Rupture State did have dystopian themes, it is purely an action novel with a fast pace and outstanding story. loved the action and the character development.
