Rogue Knight by Regan Walker is the story of Sir Geoffroi de Tournai, a Norman knight, and Emma of York, a young widow of York. Upon first glance, Geoffroi feels a connection to Emma when he sees her walking with her large hound, Magnus. Upon their first meeting, Geoffroi is unsure of how Emma will take to him as they meet in a field of bodies after a battle with the rebels, when she finds one of her adopted children lying unconscious amid the dead on the battle field. Geoffroi helps her get the boy home and then helps her several more times because it is the right thing to do. Emma is confused by Geoffroi's help as she is like the rest of England; under the belief that every Norman knight is vicious and will do awful things. While harboring a secret, Emma and Geoffroi fall in love and when her secret can no longer be kept, Emma makes the decision to risk it all by ensuring that the man she loves will live. Will Emma and Geoffroi get their happily ever after or will the two enemies never be able to put their differences aside and live with only half their hearts?
Rogue Knight by Regan Walker has imagery that will place you right there with the characters, strong and realistic emotions, realistic characters, and best of all, the author is able to blend true history with fiction to create a beautiful, if slightly tragic love story. Regan Walker weaves a tale of one of the knights from The Red Wolf's Prize and you get updates on some of the characters from the first book, but you don't have to read the first to be able to enjoy the second. The love that Geoffroi shows to Emma's family that Emma herself has adopted seemed a little unusual to me for the time period, since I thought that adopted children weren't treated as well as blood, but it goes to show that sometimes, no matter the age you live in or the circumstances under which your family forms, love can conquer everything if you just open up your heart. In Emma and Geoffroi's case, love was able to conquer the fact that they should have been enemies. It makes for a more beautiful story when two characters can put aside their differences and follow the path fate has laid out for them. I will be watching out for the last two books of the series as I bet Regan Walker has done an amazing job, just as she did with the first two books.
