Roach by Alisa Perederey provides the reader with a rare and vivid look into the dark and dismal characters whose lives become intertwined while the country is at war. The author captivates her audience with tales of lies, deceit, betrayal, and murder set in what appears to be the future or possibly the end of humanity as we know it. While reading Roach, I came to a scene where I was forced to reevaluate a system of passing judgment upon others when asked, “In the face of death, which would you choose? Fight or flight.” There is a commonality that every reader can relate to - love, death, joblessness, depression, and despair - things that are often taboo subjects in our society but should be discussed. I found this story very enlightening in spite of its dark side.

I particularly liked the way the author stayed true to the dystopian genre. At the beginning you may ask yourself, where’s the beef? Keep reading, trust me when I say, “It’s in there”! Roach is a story that piques your interest from the first page as the characters are developed with every chapter, revealing more details from the breadcrumbs left behind. I found myself wanting to read more of what happened to each character - him, her, and them. I wasn’t disappointed. If you like fiction with a dab of apocalypse and fatal attraction, you’ll like Roach by Alisa Perederey. Roach is a definite page turner, and I look forward to reading more works by Alisa Perederey.
