My approach to risk has always been more the study of the possibility of failure, covering every conceivable scenario of what could go wrong. I think a great deal of this comes from upbringing. We didn’t have lots of money, and we learned to plan exactly how and where it would be spent. That made reading Graham Ruddick’s Risk Roulette: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Businesses Work and Others Fail quite an eye-opener. His interviews with many prosperous risk-takers will demonstrate several different perspectives.

Risk Roulette is not a “rah-rah, so you want to be an entrepreneur" book. While each section or chapter is an example of how a successful business owner or manager viewed risk, it is not written to cheer you on. It’s written to educate. Don’t get me wrong. This is not in the style of what I’ll call dry academic writing. It is composed in short sentences, almost thoughts. It’s quite easy to read and written in a style you can easily take notes from. Believe me, you’ll want to make notes. Graham Ruddick has given you many things to add to your war chest. This also isn’t full of “isms”. This is full of real ideas, raw experiences, successes, and failures. These remarkably successful people talk about the risks they take. Even more important is the discussion of the path they use, their approach, and their study of risk. Some were “jump right in” people at the start. Some were lucky; some not so much, but Risk Roulette's content means that you can learn from all the examples.
