In Rising Sun, an epic fantasy novel by Satori Saru, on a remote mountain in China lies a temple where defenders of light obediently train under the guidance of their Sifu. However, Quan, a student, feels something is amiss. Haunted by terrifying visions and a sense of dread, Quan's worst fears come true when he and his friends discover their elders participating in a dark ritual and realize they are demons. After their former masters turn on them, the students have nowhere to run and fall victim to the monsters. Only one survivor remains -- Hakana, who is rescued by the Iron Monkey and taken to the sanctuary of the Great Sage, Sun Wukong. Now, Hakana must join the monkey king and his fellow warriors to make a last stand against the demon General Virote and his Gnok army.
An eclectic blend of action, fantasy, and philosophy makes Rising Sun a gripping tale you don't want to put down. Satori Saru draws from ancient Chinese mythology to deliver a page-turner of a novel that captivates you from beginning to end. Weaving a fast-paced tale, Saru takes readers on a wild rollercoaster of a ride, with an unpredictable plot filled with shocking reveals and twists and turns you never see coming. The stakes are always high as your favorite characters might die at any moment, which makes the action sequences all the more impactful and keep you glued to the pages. I especially enjoyed the development of Hakana -- from an idealistic young student to a righteous warrior willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. In conclusion, Rising Sun is a must-read for fantasy readers who love action-packed stories about good versus evil.
