Right Now Is Worth It is a young adult drama by Thomas Corrigan. After losing her older sister in a freak accident, high school teen Emma struggles to navigate school, friends, and a toxic environment at home because of her abusive, ultra-controlling stepfather. Her only source of comfort comes from spending time with Shaun -- an intelligent boy who feels insecure about his looks -- with whom she starts a burgeoning relationship. Meanwhile, her friend Sophia -- a popular cheerleader -- feels the pressures of her studies and relationships leading her to date Jackson, a star athlete with dubious intentions. When Emma's biological father comes back into her life after years of estrangement, tensions rise in the Walsh household. Furthermore, Jackson finds himself going down a path where there is no turning back.

Author Thomas Corrigan explores some heavy topics such as parental abuse, anxiety, and depression among high school teenagers. Right Now Is Worth It is a relevant novel for our times that young adults will find easy to relate to. The narrative is deliberately paced and suits the plot perfectly. This is a character-driven story. Emma, Shaun, Sophia, and Jackson's hopes, dreams, and struggles drive the narrative with each character getting sufficient page time to make for an absorbing read. I adored the relationship between Emma and Shaun and found those two to be my personal favorites. The conflict within Jackson's mind was also riveting to read. I will recommend Right Now Is Worth It to readers who enjoy character-driven young adult stories.
