Rescuing Crockett by David Z. Pyke begins in 1838 when a surprising portrait in the Prussian Embassy in Mexico City hints at the survival of Davy Crockett, a beloved American frontiersman thought to have died at the Alamo. Stirred by this revelation, Powhatan Ellis, the American envoy, employs Hiram Brown and his extensive intelligence network to investigate. Among those recruited for this mission is Silas Grant, a 16-year-old learning frontier skills and the blacksmith trade, who is unexpectedly drawn away from his idyllic life and the girl he loves. Their dangerous journey to uncover the truth behind the Alamo legend, through interviews with survivors and the trail of the Mexican army, unravels an unexpected secret, turning historical assumptions on their heads.
As I was reading Rescuing Crockett by David Z. Pyke, I kept going online to check if the events being described were real. That is how good Pyke is at crafting his completely unique and engrossing storyline. The historical details are rich and textured. The standout to me is the Mexican retreat and its descriptions of the Mexican army's movements, the devastation left behind, and the interactions with the Powell family. These felt so real, and the written visuals are almost cinematic in scope. There is a continued thread of tension and uncertainty throughout the novel and it hits fever pitch when the Texians come across an unexpected presence that was not there during the reconnaissance and that has the potential to bust the entire operation. The twists are wonderful and, aside from feeling immersive, the book is just plain good. An entertaining read and a line of literature that I want more of. Very highly recommended.
