Remembering Home by Gloria J Cunningham is the story of Cunningham's life, her special memories with her family, and their traditions. Growing up in North Carolina, Cunningham beautifully describes their daily routines, the hard work of her grandparents and mother, their humble home, and their devotion to God and family. Upon leaving home and starting her own family, she lived in a house more than double the size of the four-room house in which she lived as a child. Still, Cunningham wanted to recreate the fond memories from her childhood home in her new home by planting flowers, a vegetable garden, and fruit trees. Her stories are all centered around the joys of her children and grandchildren, her continued connection with her mother and grandparents, and the subsequent losses of those special people in her life. Remembering Home by Gloria J Cunningham celebrates the beauty of family, tradition, and the moments you share. It serves as a testimony to the focal role of the home in a child's life.
Remembering Home by Gloria J Cunningham is an absorbing, feel-good, and reflective story of her life and the special memories that remain dominant in her mind. I am awe-struck by the memories that Cunningham shares in this book, memories of family, tradition, and love – not what she had, but with whom she shared those experiences. The sharing and preparation of food feature strongly in this book, as the family gathered for special occasions. Cunningham could have chosen to focus on many different aspects of her life, perhaps more on her career or marriage. Still, I love that she decided to focus on family and the bonds they developed over the years. Remembering Home is a reminder about what is essential in life, not necessarily what we do, but with whom we do it. Cunningham puts life back into perspective in this beautiful recollection of her family life.
