After the deaths of her parents and grandmother, Ryleigh Donovan is left caring for her younger sister Mia and struggling to survive. After a traumatic experience, she meets Jackson, who is something called a Death Dealer...but she doesn't have time for that - she has to take care of her sister! Jackson is drawn to Ryleigh, and intrigued by the loving relationship between the two sisters. He's been tasked with bringing Ryleigh home to fulfill a prophecy and, to save the girls from prying questions, he offers them a chance to get away. Reluctant Prince by Dani-Lyn Alexander is a great read for those looking for a cool new young adult fantasy series to sink their teeth into.
Ryleigh is a great big sister and you can tell that family is very important to her by the way she tends to Mia. Though their parents' and grandmother's deaths are only lightly touched upon, you can really feel the sadness and loss that have shaped her into the woman she is today. She is strong at the beginning of the book, and that only continues to grow as she's put through her paces and introduced to the Kingdom of Cymmera.
Age-wise, this book was odd. It was YA fantasy, but much of the content tended to skew older. A 17-year-old getting the job of caring for her little sister would make her old for her years, so I guess that's how the age thing developed. Dani-Lyn Alexander does a great job describing scenes and situations. I appreciated that she often included sounds in her settings, as well as sights and feelings. It was great to be able to picture things like the earthquake, fight scenes, and others with such vivid qualities.
