When planet Earth is left powerless by an eruption of the sun, an unassuming professor in Belfast correctly predicts the disastrous path ahead that may lead humanity to total destruction. Teaming up with a grieving friend, a governmental officer, and a prison supervisor, this unlikely group of people campaigns to make their voices heard before the planet spirals out of control. Reliance is a work of fiction in the dystopian, drama and thriller sub-genres, and was penned by author Paul McMurrough. Written for mature audiences, the novel does contain some instances of explicit language use but is largely free of graphic or sensitive content.
Author Paul McMurrough has crafted an excellent, highly engaging dystopian disaster novel that delivers both realistic plot events and large-scale thrills as its story unfolds. The work is more plot and concept focused than character-led, but the central cast of key players is well drawn to allow us insight into their motivations and the struggles they face along the journey. I felt for Derek the most with the sacrifices and decisions he was forced to make, and I liked that the power of the individual team of characters had a major influence on the wider plot. The inner workings of society within this dystopian setting are also really well developed to present a realistic world where fear begins to creep in and anarchy is only ever a heartbeat away, which is very thrilling to read. Overall, I would recommend Reliance to fans of in-depth thriller novels and realistic dystopian worlds.
