Regret by Danielle Doolittle is book one of The Guardians series. Penelope Green's life is fairly mundane and routine, until a new girl named Jenna arrives at school. She befriends Jenna, and finds herself drawn to Jenna's older brother, Kane Whitmore, who seems to despise her. Not to mention her little sister is taking an interest in a jock that she knows is bad news. To make matters worse, she's attacked in a cave by some growling figure and found by Kane who reveals to her that her life is about to become more complicated. Penelope comes face to face with her past as she slowly gains memories of the birth parents she can't remember, and learns that her unknown heritage as a Guardian gives her an ability to heal. None of that compares to the madman that has come back to haunt her with the intent of taking his revenge, even if it means killing someone she loves.
Full of heart, Regret is charming, endearing, and a fast paced adventure in discovering internal strength. Danielle Doolittle creates a story of love, hope, and believing yourself with Penelope as the perfect lead, because she isn't your typical heroine. She has insecurities and self doubt, but by the end she finds power in herself that she never thought she had. She embraces her power and her weaknesses, and uses her mistakes to get stronger. The writing is light, but the stakes are real and there's a lot of social commentary underneath used through the subplot involving Phil, the despicable jock. Doolittle weaves together a modern teenager, ancient history and mythology with ease. Regret is aimed at young adults, but it's a story that anyone can enjoy! I can't wait for the second book to see where Penelope's story goes.
