Rebels and Thieves by Russell Williams is a crime thriller with a lot of merit, from the deft plotting to the ingenious handling of characters and thematic development. The conflict starts with the struggles of an investment company and quickly escalates into a terrorist threat on the United States. Robert Kemp knows well that Black Capital Investment is going down and is not prepared to file for bankruptcy and that is why the greedy manager turns to the Russians for help. What happens is a game that involves multiple murders and a sinister plan to grab huge sums of money from the stock market. But the Miami Police Department and the FBI are on the move to shut down Black Capital Investments. The problem is that they are not prepared and aren’t aware of what they are dealing with. Follow Detective Rick Malone and Special Agent Emily Raven in a deadly game with stakes they are barely aware of.
Russell Williams creates very compelling, indeed sophisticated characters and puts them into a conflict that grows quickly into a crisis situation. Instead of giving up, the manager of a hedge fund decides to seek the help of the Russians, and what readers witness is a game involving highly skilled assassins and a threat to the nation. The premise is strong, because it involves a powerful company about to go down and the boundless greed of one man. The prose is crisp and wonderful to read, the plot featuring very dramatic turns and' Aha' moments that keep readers looking forward to what happens next. I particularly loved the way the conflict is handled and how it affects the different aspects of the narrative — plot, character, and setting. Rebels and Thieves: A Crime Thriller will keep you up reading through the night.
