Realms by K.T. Kimbrough takes an exciting, unconventional look at a world where angels and demons war beside us. Seth Ivory had an epiphany, an awakening of the soul. It changed the way the rock star sees the world, and has crept into his music. His latest songs mystify his band mates, manager, and girlfriend alike. Frustrated by their resistance to the songs he’s written, Seth goes for a drive up the mountainside on his bike. That’s where a car ploughs into him, snapping his bike in two, and sending him over the guardrail. As he flies through the air, Seth is certain that this must mean his death. The Reaper that appears to him soon afterward seems to confirm this, but if Seth is dead then why did somebody just say he has a pulse?
K.T. Kimbrough has created an enthralling world where dimensional barriers are all that separate the familiar from the supernatural. The rules governing the coinciding realm are both imaginative and believable. Angels and demons populate this world, but as re-imagined versions of the familiar depictions. Kimbrough effortlessly infuses the religious elements surrounding these beings with a unique and compelling spiritual interpretation. While there is an obvious good vs evil element to the plot, there’s only a minimum of preachiness in the narrative and it never detracts from the main quest. The characters are believable and relatable overall, but I felt that the angels were the most interesting. K.T Kimbrough’s Realms is a memorable read with a spiritual essence that distinguishes it from other works in the angels and demons focused niche of urban fantasy.
