Real Life with Ed & Ken: 3 Novelettes is a work of fiction in the humor, slice of life, and urban fiction sub-genres, and was penned by author Rev. Shakes Spear as volume one in a collection of stories about the titular characters. Ed and Ken are polar opposite brothers who run an apartment building together in Vancouver. Whilst Ed strives for fame, fortune, and everything he thinks the world has cheated him out of, Ken seeks solitude and the simple life. In three adventures – Who Even Cares?, Kahuna / Satada and Self-Edicated – these highly amusing, satirical and reminiscent figures get into all sorts of bizarre situations, and of course, the hilarity ensues.
Author Rev. Shakes Spear has crafted a collection of tales that reminded me of some of the comedy greats in the highs of nineties film and television: a little Beavis and Butthead here, a little Steve Martin there. This makes for a winning combination as the sharp meets the silly in the author’s narration, characterizing the daring and often reckless Ed and his poor brother who keeps getting dragged along for the ride. I think my favorite of the novellas was Who Even Cares? as I really enjoyed the poking fun at the TV reality show genre, but all of the stories have their charms. The dialogue too was a particular highlight, really bringing side characters to immediate life and offering some real zingers. Overall, I would definitely recommend Real Life with Ed & Ken: 3 Novelettes to fans of slick and surreal humor with plenty of comedy power behind it.
