Liza Morado’s Rat on a Rat: A Memoir With A Peculiar Twist is a unique story that takes place in White Hall, Maryland, in 1956 and beyond. Liza describes specific memories to give a description of the experiences and how she perceived living in a small country town. She was very detailed when she talked about the houses, especially hers. She adored her father and saw him as being the bravest person she had ever met. The second part of the book goes into depth about her investigation of possible Mafia ties with White Hall. She was friends with Dushka Kaufman and noted the peculiar behavior of her father, Alex. When she attended Dushka’s wedding, she saw ties between Alex and Furman Hendrix. As an adult, she understands that Alex and Furman were quite wealthy, and they were eccentric toward their neighbors and employees. What she wanted to know is how they got their wealth without ever seeming to work as her father had.
Rat on a Rat: A Memoir With A Peculiar Twist is a story that I can connect with. Liza Morado mentions people like Joe Exotic and “Whitey” Bulger as she looks at how the FBI ties into her story. Joe Exotic and Bulger were involved in murder-for-hire schemes, and I saw both in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which is less than twenty minutes from where I live. I liked how she could connect certain dates and activities by using the accounts of neighbors and employees. While I found the first half of the book to be a lot of atmosphere in vivid detail, once I reached the investigation, I understood why Morado went into such depth. It was fun recognizing the discrepancies and conspiracies as each witness gave information. The end of the book was quite chilling to me, as I noticed something that I would be afraid of. Readers who enjoy suspense that is slow to build, involving uncovering secrets, will enjoy this book.
