Rabbit’s Snow Day, written by Todd Strader and illustrated by Penny Collins, is the ideal bedtime story and perfect educational read to teach children all about rabbits, both wild and domestic. This will further the love children have for rabbits and give them an inside look at everything they could ever want to learn. The book explores the life of a rabbit family and makes the perfect winter read for families to enjoy together.
The story delves inside the home of a rabbit family in an underground burrow where they’re safe and snug away from the cold. Todd Strader fits the perspective of a rabbit family with language that hits upon their viewpoint, such as referring to a truck as a 'roar, roar' thing. The language is sweet and has a rhyme scheme to it that is playful with vivid descriptions that children will love. The story has a soft and quiet tone, one that will make for the perfect bedtime read. The illustrations are lovely and warm with a style reminiscent of old storybooks, which adds to the charm and sweetness of the story. After children get a peek at the home of wild rabbits, they learn facts about them which include their status as prey, their hind feet, their defense mechanism to freeze, and their food source, among many other facts. Strader doesn’t just include information about wild rabbits but also includes facts about pet rabbits that will be perfect for teaching children how to care for their pet bunnies.
This is the perfect tool to teach children about the wild but also teach them about responsibility. Further reading with a few online sources and books are provided, which helps further educate children who want pet rabbits and will show them how to properly care for the animal. The story of St. Francis tells about his connection with a rabbit and his belief that all animals are connected to us through God’s love, the perfect representation of the core message within this sweet book.
