The first thing you are going to notice about Puttin' Cologne on the Rickshaw by William Bouffard is the quirky title. It was the title that drew me in but it is the content of the book that made me really enjoy the book. William Bouffard within his book has tackled an ever growing problem in today’s society, rude behavior throughout society with a focus on the workplace. So many offices these days are a pits of games, mean girl style behavior, and the usual office politics.
William Bouffard takes a hard look at the ranks of sociopaths, sycophants and the regular backstabbers that seem to run rampant in today’s workplaces. It takes a good fun poke at the hierarchy of today’s workplaces, pointing out in a somewhat funny way how everyone is only out for themselves gone are the day of true teamwork it is all about who can get ahead.
I have to say one of my personal favorite segments of Puttin' Cologne on the Rickshaw was the funny segment of what a joke performance reviews are. Personally that has been one of my niggling complaints for years, there is rarely a clear set of anything in those reviews these days that isn’t completely subjective. One Manager may love you for something and another won't like you at all for the same thing it is all a matter of preference. The book really is a great and enlightening read with advice that will actually help you to navigate the bumpy waters of a modern workplace. Whether you are someone who has been in the workforce non stop, are someone who has taken a break and is re-entering or a young person just entering the workforce, this is a good read for you. There is a good balance of humor and seriousness with safe and useful advice.
