Psychic is a work of fiction in the thriller and suspense subgenres. It is aimed at young adult readers and was penned by author TS Rose. The book follows Alpha, a young woman who uses her psychic powers to keep the care home she grew up in safe until the use of her powers draws the attention of several groups. Teaming up with an aspiring criminal named Sunday, the pair must navigate the danger as they try to prevent what will surely be one of the most severe terrorist attacks seen in Britain for generations.
I was quickly and thoroughly hooked by the world of this book. The idea of people with psychic abilities not just existing but being sought out and fought over as a precious resource was intriguing and sets the stage for an exciting tale of someone with powers trying to survive and do the right thing. Author TS Rose demonstrates an excellent pedigree for character writing, creating in the form of protagonist Alpha a complex and engaging lead character whose characterization develops naturally as the story progresses.
As the political and social dynamics of the various factions are gradually revealed, we learn more and more about Alpha and Sunday in their responses to the emerging situation, and the pacing and prose on show in Psychic are excellent. Overall, this is definitely a must-read book for fans of paranormal thrillers, one that tells an intimate character-driven story but also one that touches on a bigger picture happening around the characters.
