Promise? is a YA paranormal thriller by Allison Thompson. An aspiring art teacher, 18-year-old Madison is on her way home from work when she is accosted in a back alley by a demon named Marcus. As she struggles to escape, a stranger appears and fights Marcus as Madison runs. Madison later again runs into her rescuer, Kyle Ash, and she learns that his parents had died when he was ten years old. Empathetic after the loss of her own parents at the age of five, Madison and Kyle form a dangerous friendship - one which will ultimately end in tragedy.
Allison Thompson's brilliantly written Promise? was definitely a page-turner for me. Although shorter than your average book, Promise? was quite in-depth, covering not only the story of the love-struck main characters but also delving into their back histories - including how both Kyle's and Madison's parents met and died. I confess that much of the story was quite heartbreaking. Still, it gives the reader quite a deep insight into how this mischievous and meddlesome demon - who finds sheer delight in killing the light inside someone's soul - actually started his psychopathic journey into Kyle's and Madison's lives individually. I hope the author decides to write a sequel someday. Books that keep the reader on a rollercoaster from start to finish, leaving them wanting more, are a rarity nowadays. I am delighted to have read Promise? and recommend it to avid fans of YA paranormal tales. Such an amazing read - thanks, Allison!
