Profane Rites by PJ Wilson is a riveting fantasy novel that follows a woman of faith on her spiritual journey to complete the Trial of Saint Mirai. Sister Honorata and her companion, Yonas, a member of the Order of Edessa, travel from Rampura to Aluia to search for a missing priestess. But, once they arrive in Aluia, they learn of a ghoul that terrifies the locals and of a heretic who is to be eliminated. Thus, besides doing her work—praying and using the Song of Devi to ease the suffering of the victims of the war started by the rebels—Honorata must also face plenty of danger. She will have to face many struggles that will challenge her, make her doubt herself, her faith, healing powers, and contemplate her relationship with Devi. She will find herself used and tricked. But at what cost?
Profane Rites by PJ Wilson is a great and immersive fantasy novel, beautifully written. PJ Wilson is a talented writer. He knows how to write vivid imagery and construct an intriguing story filled with sustained tension, unsettling fighting and war scenes, and well-rounded characters. It impressed me that the heroine protagonist never strayed from her path, no matter how challenging it became to fulfill her mission. I admired her for her noble qualities. She inspires humility, devotion, and spiritual growth. I loved to immerse myself in this staggering tale of survival and dedication to the priesthood in challenging times. Profane Rites by PJ Wilson completely swept me away, and I would recommend it to any fantasy readers.
