Pride and Principal by Marc Jedel is the sixth book in the Silicon Valley mystery series. Marty struggles to balance caring for his nieces, his job, and his relationship. He walks a fine line to keep everything running smoothly. However, when the school principal is found dead and his nemesis is the prime suspect, he can’t shake the feeling that she’s innocent. When she pleads for his help, he goes after the real killer. He has a knack for sleuthing and knows he can find the truth but a few complications get in the way. His nemesis has a motive that the police think is strong enough to charge her with murder. His first step is finding suspects with motives equally strong enough to convince the police to look elsewhere. The investigation is shaken when an explosive threat creates a chain of events that tosses everything in his life out of balance.
This mystery can stand alone from the previous books in the series. However, it builds upon those mysteries with more twists, suspense, and comedy. The characters you love return with the same humor and heart that Marc Jedel does so well. Marty has delightful dynamics with every character, though his back and forth with the detective is always fun as he rarely acknowledges Marty’s assistance. The mystery derives humor from Marty’s exchanges with his nemesis, even when he’s trying to help her. These scenes are clever and show how easily Jedel incorporates charm into each mystery. The family-centric elements are derived from moments between Marty and his nieces which gives the mystery so much heart. These family hijinks feel sincere and are some of the cutest scenes as they explore the dutiful side of Marty and deepen his character. The nieces are adorable and bring out the softness of Marty’s character. These lovely dynamics provide a realness to the world that Jedel has created. Pride and Principal is a laugh-out-loud good read with sleuthing, murder, suspense, action, and family hijinks to keep you entertained from start to finish.
