Preternatural: Reckoning, Book 3 is the conclusion to Peter Topside's horror trilogy. The town of Meadowsville has had its fair share of monsters and other supernatural occurrences. Among these evils are two that are etched into the memories of each resident as they both committed vile and heinous crimes. John Smith and Blackheart. The townsfolk were beginning to heal and rebuild when the most despicable evil of the two, John Smith, rose from his cold slumber to wreak havoc on the town once more. Meadowsville is once again terrorized by Mr. Smith and the city council takes a vote to resurrect Blackheart so he can return John to the earth's embrace, but is that wise? What happens once Blackheart has fulfilled his purpose?
Preternatural: Reckoning Book 3 did a good job of establishing just how dangerous the two dead men were to the town early on in the plot, and I got the sense that those two were really bad news. That, in turn, made their respective resurrections have an even greater impact on me as I knew what the stakes were and how dire the situation was for the town. Peter Topside did a fantastic job of setting the stage for the reappearance of those two characters, and I like how the tension is constantly been ramped up as the story progresses. The right amount of tweaking with the pacing and tension can have a significant effect on how surreal a scene appears to the reader and the author had excellent control over both aspects. Scenes were vivid, unnerving, and overall, just how I love them in books in this genre. The characters were well written too, and John Smith's dark humor was a nice touch to an already memorable character. Other members of the cast had their own unique quirks and personalities, so I was also pleased with the character development. In conclusion, this was an interesting book, and fans of the series are in for a treat.
