Pontolong and Duckie by Michael Verrett is the story of Pontolong, a young tennis star who goes everywhere with her pet duck. She walks him on a leash made of Mardi Gras beads. She is on her way to face a top tennis player called Marie Le Boheme and plans to take Duckie with her as he is her good luck charm. As they travel to the tennis court, Duckie becomes separated from Pontolong and goes on an adventure of his own in the sewers.
The story is quirky and different and I enjoyed it. Pontolong is a very eccentric character and I love that she goes everywhere with Duckie. This could easily be a series of books with different adventures each time. I love the images used. They look like watercolors and are bright and attractive and kids will like them. I like the two rats that Duckie meets in the sewer. They are like little gangsters, but they do help Duckie in the end and they come up with the solution to stopping Marie Le Boheme and her voodoo tennis balls. Duckie seems like a great friend for Pontolong to have; he is loyal and he helps to save the day. I would have liked more about Marie Le Boheme, because she seems like an interesting character. I think this story will do well with kids aged 6 -10. A fun read.
