A discarded princess fearing for her life; a wicked stepmother; dwarfs and a poison apple; a prince and true love. Sound familiar? A happily-ever-after story about Princess Snow White? But, what if the princess discovered that it really wasn’t happily ever after? What if the man she thought was her Prince Charming wasn’t so charming after all? And that this man and his mother were dangerous? And what if the princess had become fondly attached to one particular dwarf, a boy with special needs? This princess always had a fondness for the young and disadvantaged. This is her story, with perhaps a completely different happily-ever-after.
Mary Mecham’s novel, Poisoned: Snow White’s Story, is a clever and insightful rewriting of the popular fairy tale. Every element of the original fairy tale is included, but through a twist of fate, there is more to the story than one could have imagined possible. The author chose to write this story in the first person, from Snow White’s point of view. This added a deeper thread of compassion as the young princess must endure rejection from her stepmother, fear from an abusive betrothed, and disbelief in the way others treat those with special needs. As the true Prince Charming slowly accepts and reveals his love for Snow White, the power of true love conquering all captures the compassion of both the princess and readers sharing her story. This is a classic fairy tale in its own right and its inclusivity of people with special needs and the overwhelming threat of abusive relationships, make it a touching story that heightens the importance of acceptance and caring for others. Absolutely beautiful! Loved it!
