The space opera continues in Ioana Visan’s Point of Origin (Law and Crucible Saga, Book 2). Six months have passed since the rescuers extracted her from the emergency shuttle, found her body damaged, and brought her to the asylum. Suffering from neural degeneration, Thea, an astrophysicist, is fading away with no hope of ever leaving the place. When Captain Law offers her an opportunity to board his ship in return for her help, Thea accepts it, eager to get out of the asylum even though she doesn’t fully trust Law and his crew.
This series is about Captain Law, his crew, and their mission. Yet, similar to Book 1, the plot seems to highlight a character who gets involved with Law and his crew in some ways. That said, Law and his crew don’t merely become a minor cast. In fact, Law, Eradiez, Merrik and newly introduced crew member Mia Torres, the communications officer, are more present in Book 2. Their mission is much more intriguing now - it’s like a puzzle that offers hints with each installment in the series.
The world building is clearer to me and the plot is more exciting. I expected to continue reading about Nia and her sister from Book 1, but a new character appears to be the central focus of the plot now. Visan gave a clue as to what had happened to Nia and Leelee, and I won’t spoil it for other readers. This is another solid installment from Visan and I can’t wait to start on Book 3.
