Alexander Shilin is nothing short of a genius. Pfft is a wordless children's picture book about passing gas. First, I want to say that Shilin knows how to tell a story without words quite well and it's a great way to teach children how to tell a story without words. It teaches them visual perception and helps them to learn about the world around them. There are few books being published today that are only illustrated and it's somewhat disappointing that more authors don't do wordless books.
Pfft is imaginative and creative, and will certainly spark the imagination of any child. The illustrations are wonderful and colorful and, importantly, they tell the story. It's a book that will make a child laugh and it's also a subject they can relate to because it is about the tummy actions. Passing gas may seem like a taboo subject to some, however, it's good to teach children about their bodily functions and to learn to be comfortable with their own bodies. I think the author aced it on all counts.
This is a book that kids will want to "read" over and over again. I would give the author more than five stars if I could. I hope this won't be the last wordless book from Alexander Shilin because he opens a whole new world for children. This is also a book that kids can look at on their own or you can flip the pages with them and laugh along. I highly recommend Pfft.
