Amy has just been recruited by Miss Lillian to be one of her girls. Miss Lillian runs a brothel. What she doesn't know, and what Amy has to make clear very quickly, is that Amy is not that kind of a girl. In fact, her name is really Jennifer and she's working undercover for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Amy, aka Jennifer, is looking for a very dangerous man, someone who frequents the brothel, someone who is not afraid to kill to get what he wants. But he's not the only one to watch out for. Amy (Jennifer) finds that out very quickly when she first meets Tom, who was once a Texas Ranger. It turns out that he's hot on the trail of the same criminal. And then there's the man in the checkered jacket, the call girls who really don't want to be call girls, the church ladies on a 'saving' spree and the list goes on. It could almost be a comedy if it wasn't written as an action-packed spy story.
Pinkerton did hire some women detectives and it's on this premise that author Margaret Brownley formulated the ideas for her story, or should I say stories, as she has created a series of women detective stories set in the old American west. Brownley is the author of more than thirty books and has won awards for her writing. This book is not only educational on the life of single women in the old American west of the nineteenth century, but enjoyable as well. The author brings her characters and setting to life with action-packed scenes. Although the story does drag a little in the middle, as the author tends to carry on with multiple ideas and tangents, the story is an excellent read. Well done!
