Pessimistic Permelia and the Worst Day Ever by Melanie Hawkins introduces Permelia, who believed that everything was always going to go wrong for her. Falling off her swing on a beautiful day proved her right. Realizing that she had math homework didn’t help either. After going through tons of work to set up her birthday party, Permelia woke up to a rainy day. She spent her day hiding under a dark umbrella, so she couldn’t see the next problem that might be lurking, ready to strike. With Mr. Bear trying to convince her that everything was bright and beautiful, the little girl couldn’t see what he was talking about. Would she ever discover all the wonderful things the world had to offer, or would she keep the umbrella over her head forever? Could Permelia ever find a way to look on the bright side, or would she remain pessimistic?
Pessimistic Permelia by Melanie Hawkins is an adorable take on how a child might react if they feel that every day is going wrong. Permelia and Mr. Bear are interesting characters that kids can easily identify with. The illustrations will keep children engaged with bright and colorful pictures that tell the story as well as the words do. I loved the lessons Hawkins wove through the tale that encourage children to be optimistic instead of being overwhelmed by things that don’t go their way. I recommend this story to children who are ready to learn important life lessons that will help their emotional and mental development.
