Chester is getting a puppy and he is excited. After breakfast, Chester, along with his mom and dad, go to the breeder’s house and there they see a black and white puppy with a wagging tail. Chester tells his parents that his name is Pepe in the story Pepe Learns to Run Again: An Inspirational True Story by Christina Potter. Chester and Pepe becomes friends on their way back home and Pepe listens to Chester’s stories intently. They play together every day. One day after waking up from his nap, Pepe starts limping and the vet tells them that he needs surgery on his back leg. The surgery goes well and Pepe has to exercise regularly so that he can recover quickly. The vet is not sure if Pepe can run again but Chester knows that Pepe is a fighter. Chester prays daily for Pepe’s speedy recovery. Will Pepe recover completely and be able to become an agility champion?
This is a beautiful story of companionship, unconditional love, encouragement, dedication, determination, and perseverance. It also shows the bond shared between dogs and humans. Chester and Pepe are adorable characters and will bring a smile to the faces of young readers. Pepe’s journey towards becoming the agility champion is well expressed and is palpable to readers. The illustrations are charming and they breathe life into the characters and story. The message and the concept of the story are both uplifting and encouraging. It is a good book for bedtime storytelling and is perfect for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries.
