If you love animals and sweet stories about them, you are bound to love Paws, Tails and Tales by Angelina Dayan. As a sequel to Freddy’s Magic Garden: Incredible Cat Stories, Dayan continues her whimsical tales about cats but also includes stories about dogs and even one little pig who thinks he is one. In the collection, you will meet many of the author’s furry companions who narrate their own stories, as well as “anyone with an adventure to recount.” These stories are introduced by Freddy, an enterprising kitty who acts as a kind of editor-in-chief of all the tales about tails that come to his “little writing atelier.” In these tales, any number of mishaps and misadventures occur that will surely bring a smile to your face, or even cause you to shed a tear or two.
As a lifelong cat and dog lover, I could not help but fall in love with the idea behind Paws, Tail and Tales. Angelina Dayan writes from the heart about her Maine Coons and adopted strays that have found their way into her family. I also thought the use of Freddy as the narrator a charming way to add some sass to the sentiment of the stories that make humans secondary characters – even the author is referred to as simply Mum. The author has a lovely style that reminds me of classic animal stories, such as Watership Down or Wind in the Willows. As a Brit, she offers an approach to having pets that allows them the freedom to roam in a responsible way, which may seem unusual to many Americans, but which I applaud. We do not own our animals; we simply invite them into our lives and we are the better for it.
