Paws Across Rome by Habiba Begum is a breathtaking and endearing adventure about the love between a human and her cat. Mia has always loved traveling and seeing what new places she can discover. But most of all, she loves her cat Bella and the two have a special bond. When Mia decides that Naples is her next travel destination, she soon learns that she can’t take Bella with her so she has no choice but to leave her behind with a cat sitter. She never expected her adventurous cat would decide to sneak after her. Bella makes a big mistake - she sneaks onto the wrong plane. Instead of heading for Naples, Bella is on her way to Rome. To find her beloved cat, Mia must delay her travel plans and embark on an unexpected adventure that could be even better than the trip she planned.
Friendship and loyalty are depicted through the relationship between Mia and Bella. Their dynamic gives the story heart right from the beginning. The touching story will immediately have children invested. The love the two have for each other is easily seen in their actions toward each other and it is a great representation of the bond we have with our pets. The story also inspires the love of travel and exploration through the adventurous nature of both characters. Both Mia and Bella are well-rounded in their personalities with the story showing both of their perspectives of genuine fear and worry about the other being away.
The adventure takes advantage of the beauty of Rome and turns the negative (having lost each other) into a positive with new memories made. Habiba Begum begins the story with 'Once upon a time' which sets up a fairytale-like aesthetic that pairs well with the traveling elements. This tone is brought to life with stunning illustrations that are realistically drawn with vivid colors and gorgeous backdrops. This helps to create a wanderlust aspect that pairs well with the adventure. Paws Across Rome is a charming, beautiful, and touching adventure that children and parents alike will enjoy whether it’s for the adorable cat, the lovely illustrations, or the sweet friendship.
