Paula The Busy Bee: Shani and Friends by Shani T. Night is an excellent way to teach children about the importance of honeybees. The main character is Paula, a young worker bee. The author outlines Paula's jobs as she grows up; her first job is helping to take care of the queen bee and her young larvae. Paula then helps with building the colony’s nest. When it is time for her to leave the nest, her job is to forage for nectar, pollen, water, and honey. Finally, Paula arrives in Shani’s garden as the beautiful flowers attract her. An easy-to-understand explanation of the importance of bees’ role as pollinators is given.
The author describes the life of a honeybee by comparing each step to a child’s experience. Staying home with the queen bee is like a young child helping their mother with a new baby. When Paula leaves the nest to forage, it is likened to a child going to school. The role that bees play in the proliferation of flower and honey production is essential for children to understand. The delightful illustrations by Reggie Howard enhance this understanding and provide enjoyment for the child reader. This book will stimulate a child’s imagination and gives many opportunities for parental teaching. Author Shani T. Night has developed a wonderful children’s book in Paula The Busy Bee. This book will be read over and over again!
