Author Biography

In this book, I wanted to suggest that some South Pacific explorers could have reached the Americas 14,000 years ago. This theory is supported by the discoveries at Monte Verde, Chile, which have been shown to be over 14,800 years old.

In the book, the explorers purposely choose to go past the edge of the world to see what's on the other side.

"Past the Last Island" begins in the South Pacific Islands about 14,000 years ago. Nulo, born to an island chief, is deformed and cast aside by his parents. He is saved by servant Naia. When it is found that Nulo still lives, Yon is supposed to kill him but instead leaves him on a distant island with supplies. When storms come, Nulo is tossed about in his canoe but ends up on an island with a fresh water river. This island is where Ryu, his girlfriend Nina and Nina' mother Darna along with other good people have fled from the island where Nulo's father once reigned. The rulers where Nulo and Ryu are now are fat men Liwei and Fuhua who encourage Ryu and Nulo to assemble goods they'll need to flee. Nulo's powers let him see that rivers of fire will be coming from the earth as it shakes. Nulo has spotted Aeta but they have journeys to undergo as they meet gamblers, puppeteers and others.

Author Kathleen Flanagan Rollins offers a series worth reading by all age groups in "Past the Last Island", the first of her 'Misfits and Heroes Adventures' series. Nulo and Ryu, Nina and Aeta, and Liwei and Fuhau are not golden god heroes but they survive as they sail off from island to island looking for a good place to settle. They invent kites that fly, boats that sail, and medicines that work. The plot line flows from island to island until the story's end. "Past the Last Island" recalls the wonderful works of Scott O'Dell and will appeal to many, many readers.
