Painting the Past: A Guide for Writing Historical Fiction by Meredith Allard contains valuable advice on how to write creative and engaging historical fiction. Its first and second chapters discuss the aspects of historical fiction that make it unique and the purpose for writing books in this genre. The third chapter defines what historical fiction is and touches on how an author can distinguish their historical work from others that are set in the same era. The book further expounds on the topic in another part of the book. Most authors and aspiring authors often wonder whether an idea is just a passing thought or if it is a spark that could lead to other amazing ideas and could be developed into a book. The fourth chapter delves into this topic.

Painting the Past by Meredith Allard contains twenty-seven chapters in total. It is an extensive study with important topics, both basic and secondary, that concern writing historical fiction. Because of its comprehensive coverage, the work is beneficial to both seasoned and aspiring authors. It explores topics such as traveling to historical sites for research, finding inspiration, which point of view to adopt, diversity, the basic components that make a great fiction story, and more. Allard shares her insight drawn from her extensive experience as an author and editor. I loved that she writes with humor and shares compelling anecdotes that make each part of the book engaging. Painting the Past by Meredith Allard is a thorough, insightful guide for historical fiction writers. It shows that writing books in this genre can be a fun and rewarding process. I found this book to be an amazing resource that is well-written in all aspects.
