Pain Is Not a Life Sentence: A Guide to Understanding and Eliminating Chronic Muscle, Joint, and Nerve Pain offers a comprehensive look at pain. Dr. Brandon Ramakko lends his considerable professional credentials and personal experience in dealing with pain to a complex subject often treated with indifference by far too many healthcare professionals. The book is organized into three parts. Part 1 looks at understanding pain and discusses some common misconceptions patients have about pain. Part 2 examines different types of treatments for pain and types of health professionals who can help patients with their pain. Part 3 provides a region-by-region look at pain by focusing on different areas of the body and offering more specific advice concerning therapies common to the treatment of each region.
I found two aspects of Pain Is Not a Life Sentence to be especially effective, the first being Dr. Ramakko’s knowledge of the medical establishment’s strengths and weaknesses. As the author explains, there is no single method to treat pain because patients are individuals with unique problems that often overlap. Yet, “surgeons think your problem needs surgery, the nutritionist thinks it is your diet, the chiropractor thinks it is coming from your neck, [while] the physiotherapist thinks you need to stretch more.” This skeptical awareness of the limitations of healthcare professionals made the author sound very credible to me. I also appreciated his droll sense of humor which made the highly technical aspects of the book more accessible as well. I recommend Pain Is Not a Life Sentence as a helpful resource for those struggling with chronic pain.
