Own the Scrawny by Rich Samuels is the second book in a series about Alexander. Alexander has done something pretty stupid and he did it in front of the entire school. Now a video of it has appeared online and it’s gone viral! If that weren’t bad enough, now Alexander is being bullied online. Nasty comments keep appearing under the video and he has to make a decision. Does he try to hide from it, become invisible, or does he step right up to the plate and prove everyone wrong – prove that he isn’t a loser? The one thing he needs to know is – whatever his decision, can he count on his friends to back him up?
Own the Scrawny by Rich Samuels covers a subject that is very real, even more so now that most people, kids included, spend a great deal of their time on the internet. Mr. Samuels has the ability to get into the minds of middle school kids and brings a touch of humor to a situation that would otherwise cause anxiety. I found it to be written in a very engaging manner and, not having read the first in the series, found it easy to pick up the story. It’s written clearly, has a great storyline, and is the kind of book that both teens and adults would find entertaining and useful. I think that Mr. Samuels has a unique ability to reach out to children of all ages and meet them on their own level – definitely an author to watch out for!
