Debbie Schrack brings us an amazing story of hope and courage in Over the Fence. At the age of six, Eve was abducted from in front of her house by a man known as "Papa." That was eleven years ago. She is now seventeen and her only true companion is four-year-old Honey, who lives with her, Mama, and Papa. Honey has never been in The Hole and Eve will do whatever she can to protect her even if it means having to deal with the unwelcome attention of Papa. Elsewhere there is seventeen-year-old Emma, who is currently living in Bell Meade with her Aunt Vi. Her older sister Noelle is in hospital in a vegetative state after being beaten up by her boyfriend. Her biggest hope is for Noelle to recover and for her boyfriend Jack Armstrong to go to jail and pay for what he did.

Debbie Schrack has taken two immensely delicate topics involving abuse and examined them sensitively. Through not being overly graphic, this book is ideal for young adults and more mature readers alike. From the very first page, she has your attention and takes you on a journey of revelation. The two main characters are strong and described impressively. You feel as if you have a connection with both of them. By not going into the gory details too deeply, you are allowed to use your imagination as to their circumstances without being overwhelmed by the cruelty. Over the Fence is a must-read that will keep you engaged from start to finish.
