Our Own Little Underworld is a young adult romance drama by Paige Lavoie. All Percy Bloom wants is to live the normal life of a teenager and do the things she loves. But her ultra-conservative mother has other ideas, as she wants to control every aspect of her daughter's life. When her mother drags Percy out of the school's winter formal dance, Percy's had enough and flees from her suffocating mother. Hayden Addams stumbles onto Percy outdoors while trying to escape his bullies. Feeling a deep mutual attraction, the two teens leave their homes for a road trip in Hayden's old truck, Otis. After spending time together at Hayden's aunt's cabin in Georgia, it's time for the young lovers to come home. But little do they know that the trip has changed their lives forever.
Author Paige Lavoie tells an engaging story of young love full of heart, humor, and drama. Our Own Little Underworld touches upon some relevant social issues about overbearing parents and boundaries. It asks how much parental control is okay before it becomes suffocating and toxic. Unfortunately, living vicariously through one's children is considered normal in some families, and Lavoie brilliantly showcases that here. The characters have vulnerabilities and layers of depth to their outer personas, which make them feel like real people. Percy and Hayden have palpable chemistry, and every scene featuring the two together is a joy to read. All in all, a gem of a book for romance lovers.
