Orion Poe and the Lost Explorer is the first volume of The Amazing Adventures of Orion Poe, a children and preteen action and adventure fantasy series written by Will Summerhouse. Orion lives with his grandpa in coastal Maine where his grandpa mans the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. One night, a huge storm roars in, and Orion sees a boat struggling to stay afloat in the heaving waves. Fearing the boat will be wrecked on the rocky shoals, Orion tries unsuccessfully to wake up his grandfather. He rushes out into the rain and finds the boat upended on the shore, and its passenger unconscious some yards away. The stranger's dressed in strange white clothing that sparkles, and his nose is an alarming shade of purple. Orion drags him back to the house, and his grandfather dresses the man's wounded leg. His name is Collins, and he was carrying something very important on the boat, something that Orion is determined to find.
Orion Poe and the Lost Explorer is so much fun! Disregard the fact that it's listed as a kid's book and settle in for a very enjoyable ride. This first volume in Will Summerhouse's children and preteen action and adventure story takes Orion up to the Canadian Arctic as part of an expedition to resolve the mysterious disappearance of Her Majesty's ships, the Terror and the Erebus, and their crews in 1845. While Orion is the narrator of this rousing adventure, he's a natural-born explorer and story-teller, and is clearly in his element as he sets out with Professor Merriweather and the crew of the Sea Leopard to retrace Franklin's doomed voyage. Orion Poe and the Lost Explorer is also marvelously written -- you can hear the grinding of glaciers and feel the icy chill of the air. I lost track of time reading this entertaining and exciting book and truly regretted finishing the final pages. Orion Poe and the Lost Explorer is highly recommended.
