Opioid Odyssey: Discoveries of Recovery Through Medication Assisted Treatment by Dr. Michael J. Murphy with Dr. Aafaque Akhtar addresses the effects of the opioid crisis in the United States as well as around the world. The drug addict, the opioid-dependent person, and the criminal substance abuser are sons, daughters, friends, parents, and colleagues, and the book aims to bridge the gap between them and normal people to live in a community that is in sync with each other. Every story shared in the book reveals the hazards of drug dependency and why it is important to help addicts and understand them. The stories are also about survivors of the opioid crisis and how they found their way out of self-destruction, and they give hope to millions of readers out there who want to change for the better.
Apart from the stories of recovery, the authors also share interpretative and clinical essays that give readers a lot of information and success stories about recovery and rehabilitation. The book is honest and will make readers aware of the actualities of drug dependency, the realities of the opioid crisis, and the holistic process that involves the medical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of the person being addressed as well as the person doing the addressing. Opioid Odyssey gives good insights into the opioid crisis and will help all those who are dealing with people addicted to drugs and struggling with their addiction. The many stories indicate that providing opioid use disorder treatment and other forms of drug-abuse treatment, if done in a respectful and non-stigmatizing manner, will work better for positive treatment outcomes. Dr. Michael J. Murphy and Dr. Aafaque Akhtar discuss the topic in a very methodical manner, making it easy for readers to connect with their words.
